DECATUR, Ill.
The Big Blue women opened the season 1-3, but have won three straight to improve to 4-3 on the year. The Big Blue used another balanced attack to get past Fontbonne 77-62 on Dec. 9 in the final game of the Tri-Conference Tournament. The win was also the 601st from Millikin’s women’s basketball program.
Millikin opened the game with a 50-27 halftime lead, and Ippel scored 18 of her team-high 26 points in the first half. With 4:35 left in the first half, she sank a pair of free throws that tallied her career points No. 1499 and 1500, moving her into No. 3 on Millikin’s all-time scoring list. She joins elite company, trailing only No. 1 Jodi Foster (1980-84, 1651 points) and No. 2 Julie Roe (1993-97, 1576 points). Ippel passed K.C. Hammond (1996-00, 1499 points) to move into No. 3. Three of Millikin’s all-time top scorers are from Central Illinois. Foster is from Bethany, Hammond is from Decatur Eisenhower and Ippel is from Decatur St. Teresa. Roe hails from Pinckneyville.
Ippel wasn’t the only player that Fontbonne struggled to defend. Four Big Blue finished in double figures, including 14 points off the bench from Tracie Yantis. Kelley Steers and Kayla Pembrook each had 10 in the win. Both Pembrook and Ippel posted double-doubles with 11 and 10 rebounds, respectively. Ippel also had a game-high four steals and two blocks and her 560 career rebounds ranks her No. 13 in Millikin history. Andrea Riebock led Millikin with seven assists and Steers added six.
For Fontbonne (1-5), the Griffins finished with three in double-figures led by 14 each from Calista Collier and Michelle Reale. Eleven of Reale’s 14 came in the second half. Lauren Crain also added 10 points off the bench.
Millikin shot 44.3 percent from the field (27-of-61), 18.8 percent from 3-point (3-of-16) and 69 percent from the free throw line (20-of-29). Fontbonne shot 38 percent from the field (19-of-50), 42.9 percent from 3-point (9-of-21) and 57.7 percent from the free throw line (15-of-26).
