Softball finishes 2-2 in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The softball team ended their opening trip to Memphis with a split of two games on Saturday. They topped Covenant 5-1 in the first game before falling 4-2 to Rhodes in game two.

The Panthers posted single runs in the first, second, and third innings as they took a 3-0 lead against Covenant.

Kate Jolliff Rosado gave Greenville a first inning sacrifice fly, Beth Mersinger scored a second inning run, and Rosado provided an RBI single in the third.

Covent scored in the bottom of the sixth, but Greenville answered with two runs in the top of the seventh.

Rosado gave Greenville an RBI single, and Josie Koontz scored on a throwing error by the catcher when Rosado stole second base.

Caitie Opp was the winning pitcher with a complete game of seven innings in which she limited Covenant to one run on three hits. She struck out five.

Koontz went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, and Rosado was 2-for-3 with three RBI.

Game two against Rhodes went scoreless through three and a half innings before Rhodes got on the scoreboard in the bottom of the fourth, fifth, and sixth innings.

Rhodes scored a single run in the fourth inning, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth.

Greenville broke up the shutout with two runs in the top of the seventh with a two-run homer by Kendall Farr.

Cayla Speaks was the starting pitcher and allowed one run on three hits in three innings.

Farr pitched three innings and allowed three runs on five hits.

The Panthers (2-2) will go to Central Baptist on Friday, Feb. 16.
