Softball opens with split in Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- The softball team opened their 2018 season with a 13-2 win over Covenant in a game shortened to five innings and followed it with a 9-1 loss to Rhodes in five innings. 

The Panthers allowed Covenant to gain two first inning runs, but they explode for eight runs in the bottom of the second.

Kendall Farr, Beth Mersinger, and Cayla Speaks had RBI singles in the second, and Elizabeth Hawkins broke open the game with a three-run bases-clearing double.

The Panthers made the score 11-2 with a two run double from Kate Jolliff Rosado and an RBI single by Speaks.

Greenville tacked on two more runs on RBI singles by Becca Oldham and Speaks.

Oldham pitched all five innings in the circle and permitted two runs on five hits.  She struck out one.

The Panthers were up early as their game against Rhodes was ended prematurely.

Greenville led 1-0 after the first inning when Oldham posted an RBI single.  However, that was all they would score as they allowed Rhodes to touch Maegan Stone for a run in each of the first two innings.

Mackenzie Jackson allowed two runs in 2.1 innings, and they reached Kendall far for five unearned runs in the bottom of the fifth.

The Panthers (1-1) will play Covenant and Rhodes again on Saturday.
