How It Happened
In the first quarter, after the Panthers trimmed the deficit down to 9-4 at the 8:25 mark, the Griffins rattled off a 15-0 run over the next five minutes and change to take a commanding 24-4 lead on Madison Boaz's layup.
The Griffins never looked back from there and led 33-10 after one quarter of play. Fontbonne was rolling on all cylinders offensively shooting 59.1 percent and 53.8 percent from downtown. Rylee Stafford and Jillian Venegas were already in double-figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively.
In the second quarter, the Griffins opened with a 9-2 run in five minutes and 29 seconds as Jillian Venegas' layup gave them a 42-12 advantage. They went on to outscore the Panthers 13-3 the rest of the way to lead 55-15 at the break.
In the third, the Panthers shot an improved 55.6 percent from the field and outscored Fontbonne 21-17 in the frame, though Principia still trailed 72-36 heading into the fourth. In the fourth, the Griffins outscored the Panthers 16-14 to go on for the 38-point victory.
Inside The Numbers
- The Griffins set new season-highs in field goals made (34), field goals attempted (78), 3-pointers made (15), 3-pointers attempted (40), assists (28), steals (22), and points (88).
- The 15 made 3-pointers was just one off from tying the school-record set last season against MacMurray.
- The Griffins turned 30 Principia turnovers into 39 points.
- The team also outscored them in the paint 38-30.
- Fontbonne had a 32-0 advantage in fast break points and outscored them 25-0 off the bench.
- Overall, the Griffins ended with a 43.6 field goal percentage and Principia concluded at 41.8 percent.
Principia Leaders
- Sophia Hathaway had herself a night with a game-high 35 points on 16-of-30 shooting and pulled down a game-high 18 boards.
Fontbonne Leaders
- Rylee Stafford was one point off her career-high as she ended the night with a team-high 30 points on 10-of-18 shooting, including going 8-of-16 from downtown. Its her third career 30-plus point game.
- Jillian Venegas set a career-high with 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting.
- Madison Boaz came off the bench to add 10 points and five rebounds.
- Katie Grimes added a season-high nine points off the bench.
- The reigning SLIAC Player of the Week, Riley Guffey, totaled a career-best eight assists.
