Junior Sara Wemlinger hit a three-point shot with 1:33 remaining in regulation to take the Maryville University women's basketball team into overtime with Gustavus Adolphus College in the third place game at the Surf 'N Slam Tournament hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University. The Saints carried the momentum into overtime to come away with a 68-64 victory and improve their record to 5-3 overall. Maryville trailed for a majority of the second half and had a seven point deficit with 4:12 left on the clock. Junior Courtney Bergheger hit 3-of-4 free throws and junior Kim Douglas sank a three-pointer to bring the Saints within one point of the lead. A Maryville foul and two made free throws by Jess Vadnais at 1:45 gave Gustavus Adolphus a three-point cushion, but Wemlinger came right down the floor and sank one of her two three-point shots for the game to tie the score at 54-54. Douglas had a look with 22 seconds remaining, but missed the attempt and the game went into overtime. Douglas and Bergheger combined for 10 of the Saints 14 points in the overtime period. Douglas went 2-of-3 from the field, including 1-of-1 from behind the arc, while Bergheger was 1-of-1 from the field and 3-of-5 from the charity stripe. Maryville held Gustavus Adolphus to only 40 percent shooting, including 28.6 percent from three-point range in the overtime. The Golden Gusties did not go to the free throw line once in the overtime period, while the Saints were 7-of-12 (.583). Bergheger, Wemlinger and Douglas all scored in double figures, finishing with 14, 13 and 11 points respectively. Junior Allie Wilhelm led the Saints with 20 points and 12 rebounds, marking her third double-double of the season. She shot 6-of-14 from the field and 8-of-10 from the charity stripe. Bergheger also dished out a team-high four assists and tallied a game-high seven steals.
