MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Hawks softball team returned to the City of North Myrtle Beach Park and Sports Complex this afternoon for a back-to-back games against two different opponents.
Eureka College earned a 9-2 victory to start the afternoon off. Hilbert then claimed a 14-2 win after 5 innings of play against Lehman College.
After their opening game loss, the Hawks waited longer than normal for their second game to start due to an overlapping scheduling issue. That down-time helped the Hawks regroup as they exploded with 14 runs over three innings to improve to 1-2 down south.
Marisa McIntyre earned her first win in two tries striking out 10 batters with only two walks in the night cap.
Hilbert earned 14 hits and turned them all into runs. Freshman
Gabriella Bongiorno went 3 for 4 and scored twice. Sophomore
Morgan Grosch was credited with 3 RBIs and got help from junior
Rebecca Bailey, junior
Jenna Castricone and sophomore
Brittany Cooley who all added a pair of RBIs in the game.
Bongiorno (2),
Nateal Papasergi and Cooley poked doubles in the second bill.
In the first game, Hilbert led 2-1 until the bottom of the 3rd before Eureka College scored six unanswered runs spaced over the following two innings.
Gabriella Bongiorno was the only Hawk to get a hit the final three innings as Hilbert lost 9-2.
Sophomore
Morgan McNeill went 2 for 3 hitting a double in the top of the second inning which started the Hilbert scoring spurt. Sophomore Hannah Prevoveau added a stolen base in that run but was left on base with the final out of the inning.
Senior Victoria Dzaak struck a pair out while giving up three earned runs in the loss.
Hilbert plays two games again tomorrow and both will be
live streamed. Their 3:30 pm game is against Wilkes University and the 5:30 pm game will be against Gwynedd Mercy University.
