Gorloks end season with 67-60 loss to Westminster

(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Webster Gorloks concluded its season with a 67-60 loss to Westminster on Tuesday evening at Webster University.

The opening frame was tightly contested with four ties and eight lead changes through the frame and neither side had a lead bigger than five points in the first 10 minutes. The Blue Jays (11-14, 6-10 SLIAC) began to take control about midway through but the Gorloks (11-14, 5-11 SLIAC) battled back from a 14-9 deficit to take a 17-16 at the six minute mark. Westminster came right back however with a 7-0 spurt to take a 23-17 lead almost two minutes later. WU would not go away storming back with a run of its own regaining a one point with two minutes to go. The final two minutes went back and forth before Webster scored the final four points of the frame to take a 30-28 lead into the break. Both sides shot the ball well in the stanza combining for 21-of-39 (54 percent).

The second half pretty much the same way the first one ended with both teams answering bucket for bucket until the Blue Jays hit back-to-back threes which ignited a 12-0 run turning a four point deficit into an eight point advantage. Again the Gorloks had an answer getting back to within three on an old fashioned three point play by Erin Chesnek with a little over 11 minutes to play it would be the closest they got the rest of the game as WC quickly pushed the lead back to 10 points and held the lead right around the six to eight point mark the rest of the way. Webster would close the lead to four and had a chance to get closer but Jenny Venegoni’s missed an opportunity to cash in on a three point play and Westminster came right back down and buried a three pushing the lead back to seven essentially icing the game. WU was forced to foul down the stretch and WC was solid at the line making 7-of-8 to seal the win.

After shooting 56 percent in the first half Webster was only 7-of-19 (37 percent) in the second half while the Blue Jays made 50 percent of its shot attempts (14-of-28).

Jacquelyn Wamser had a season-high 24 points in her last game as a Gorlok to lead all scorers and was joined by Katy Meyer in double figures with 10 points.
