Softball advances to winner's bracket in SLIAC tournament

ST. ANN, Mo. -- The softball team received a complete game shutout from Maegan Stone in the circle as they defeated Fontbonne 3-0 on Thursday night and set up a winner's bracket game with Westminster on Friday.

Stone completed all seven innings, giving up six hits and striking out one.

Fontbonne received one of its best opportunities to score in the third inning when they opened the frame with two singles.  With nobody out, Maddie Cooksey popped up a bunt attempt that catcher Kate Jolliff Rosado dove in foul territory to catch, followed by a sacrifice bunt that served as the second out of the inning.  Stone worked out of the jam with runners on second and third by getting Courtney Kedroski to ground out on a come-backer to end the inning.

The Panthers received all three of their runs in the fourth inning when they made the most of their limited scoring opportunities off of Fontbonne pitcher Maddy Strickland.

Oldham led off Greenville's half of the fourth inning with a walk, and Mackenzie Jackson came in to pinch run.

Rosado doubled to center field, allowing Beth Mersinger to hit with two runners in scoring position.  Mersinger produced an RBI double, and Kendall Farr followed with an RBI single to put Greenville up 2-0.  Cayla Speaks later added an RBI groundout.

Fontbonne had a two-out triple in the fifth, but Stone retired the next batter to end the inning.  In the sixth and seventh innings, Stone stranded a Fontbonne runner on first base.

The Panthers (19-15) will play at 1 p.m. on Friday.
