Women's soccer drops first SLIAC match of season to Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, Mo. - The women's soccer team faced a difficult challenge at Fontbonne on Saturday afternoon, and the Panthers came away with a 2-1 defeat.

Greenville grabbed the lead in the match in the 28th minute when Samantha De La Cruz collected her third goal of the season with assists from Jen De Leon De Leon and Emma Cadwell.

Later in the 40th minute, Fontbonne tied the score at 1-all, and it stayed that way until the 71st minute of the match when the Griffins recorded the winning goal.

Fontbonne led Greenville with a 17-7 shot advantage. Greenville had four shots on goal, and Fontbonne added eight shots on goal.

The Griffin held a 12-1 advantage in corner kicks.

De La Cruz and De Leon De Leon each led GU with two shots.

Goalkeeper Grace Gehner protected the net from a flurry of Fontbonne shots, tallying six saves in the match.

The Panthers (6-4, 6-1 SLIAC) host Blackburn on Wednesday at 7 p.m. in Greenville at Francis Field.
