Westminster Men's Soccer Records First Win on New Turf

FULTON, Mo. - Westminster's men's soccer recorded their first win of the season, along with earning the first win on the brand new turf field.

The Blue Jays improve to 1-2 on the year with the win.

"There was great effort and energy today," said Westminster Head Coach Adam Galla. "We did a good job defensively by being organized and closing down space quickly. In the attack, we finally started to find our movement which led to us connecting through the midfield."

Westminster defeated Illinois College 4-0, with four different Blue Jays adding goals.

The first goal for Westminster came in the 10th minute on a header from Philip Udinyiwe after a corner cross from Patrick Wisnewski

Wisnewski added a goal himself in the 22nd minute to put the Blue Jays up 2-0. Not wanting to be finished for the half, Brent Lampen added a third goal in the 36th minute on an assist from Jephte Ngendo to head into the locker rooms after 45 minutes up 3-0.

The Blue Jay defense remained steadfast in the second half, shutting out Illinois College and allowing just three shots.

A goal in the 89th minute from Michael Ellinger was the icing on the cake for the Blue Jays, adding an extra insurance goal and finishing the game up 4-0, the most goals the squad has scored in a single match so far this season. Ellinger's goal was assisted by Barrett Smith on a corner cross.

Connor Bandre' and Chase Vogt split time in between the posts with Bandre' taking the win and making one save.

"Overall this was a big step in the right direction and we are beyond excited to get the first win on the new field," added Galla.

Westminster takes a full week off of match play and returns to the home pitch September 16 to face Wartburg. The match is set for 1 p.m.
