JACKSONVILLE, Ill. - Westminster women's basketball dominated MacMurray in their final road contest of the season, 107-65.
Westminster improves to 13-11 overall and 7-6 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference.
"Our ladies were on a mission tonight," said Westminster Head Coach James Arnold. "They know we are in a must-win situation and came out and really took care of business."
Mirrakohl Johnson posted a strong start for Westminster, scoring five of the team's first 10 points to lead 10-4 after just two minutes. The Highlanders answered with an 8-0 run to take the lead at the 5:18 point of the first quarter and were able to hold their small lead for over two minutes before the Blue Jays ended the quarter on a 9-0 run and never looked back.
"One of our goals was to dominate the rebounding battle and MJ (Johnson) set the tone that we would control the boards from the get go."
The Highlanders continued to stay close to Westminster for the opening minutes of the second quarter, but the Blue Jays exploded for a 17-0 run to take a 42-19 lead.
Despite the strong scoring for Westminster in the second quarter, they were still able to add to it in the third quarter, scoring 29 points in the 10 minutes of play, holding MacMurray to just 13 points.
Westmisnter again poured on the offensive attack in the fourth quarter, scoring a total of 31 points in the quarter but only managing to hold MacMurray to 25 points to end the game at 107-65.
Five players scored in double figured for the Blue Jays, including Johnson, Kendahl Adams, Grace Archambault, Mikalyn Callahan and Jahne Williams.
Johnson posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Adams added 21 points to lead the team, also recording nine rebounds, four assists, and two steals.
Archambault contributed 15 points along with Callahan's 13, while Williams added 10 for the Blue Jays.
"I was truly impressed with our team effort," said Arnold.
Westminster returns home to face Blackburn for its final game of the regular season. Tipoff is set for 1 p.m. and the team will honors its two graduating seniors Payton Beeler and Kelsey Ray.
"Saturday, we'll wrap up the regular season with our hopes still alive and we bid farewell to two very special young women."
