ST. ANN, Mo. - Westminster softball wins the opening game of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament with an 11-9 win over No. 4 Webster.

"This was a tough game, but our bats were hot, especially with Mackenzie Myers going 4-4 today," said Westminster Head Coach Joe Henderson. "We bent but we did not break. I'm happy we broke through, but we need to play better tomorrow and we will. I'm proud of these young ladies."

The Blue Jays got on the board first with three runs in the bottom of the first on an RBI single from Mackenzie Myers to score Katie Price and Amber Tepen. Aubrie Vaughn added the third run with a double to left field to score Madison Washington. 

The Gorloks answered in the second with two runs of their own, but the Blue Jays opened up the score by adding four more runs in the bottom of the inning. After Callie Collier walked to lead off the inning, Brooke Laidley blasted her fourth home run of the year to make the score 5-2. Tepen hit a double and was driven in by Washington on a single to left center field. Vaughn added her second RBI of the day to score Washington. 

Westminster managed to shutout Webster in the third and continued their scoring run. Laidley singled on a grounder back to the pitcher and a triple from Tepen made the score 8-2 after three innings. 

Webster made the score 8-5 in the top of the fourth, but the Blue Jays added two more in the bottom of the inning to retain their lead on an unearned run from Myers and an RBI from Collier to make the score 10-5 after four innings. 

Webster tallied two runs in the fifth and for the first time all game, Westminster was shutout in the bottom of the fifth. 

Each team scored a run in the sixth to make the score 11-8 on a sacrifice bunt from Bailey Johnson. The Blue Jays held Webster to just one run in the seventh to earn the win. 

Katie Price pitched all seven innings for the win, her 14th of the season. 

The Blue Jays play game two of the SLIAC Tournament Friday at 1 p.m.
