Junior Allie Wilhelm recorded her first double-double of the season, but it was not enough to carry the Maryville University women’s basketball team to victory as they lost a 77-48 decision to Washington University-St. Louis. The Saints fall to 3-2 overall with the loss, which breaks a two-game winning streak. Despite shooting only 25.8 percent from the field in the first half, Maryville was able to keep the game close and trailed by only single digits for a majority of the half. The Saints were as close as three points with 10:31 remaining before halftime, but the Bears went on a 7-0 run in a two-minute time period to quickly increase their lead to 10 points. The two teams went back and forth and Maryville was within six points of the lead with 2:33 left in the half, but Shanna-Lei Dacanay sparked another run by the Bears with a three-point shot at 2:16, as they finished out the half with a 14-point advantage. Maryville got within 11 points six minutes into the second half, but the Saints could not break through the double digit deficit, as Washington U. continued to build their lead. The Bears, who shot 44.3 percent (31-of-70) for the game, including 50.0 percent (7-of-14) from behind the arc, led by as many as 34 points in the second half. The Saints finished the game with a 25.0 field goal percentage (15-of-60), including 18.2 percent (4-of-22) from three-point range. Maryville forced a total of 19 Bear turnovers, but committed 18 turnovers themselves. The Saints were also out rebounded 54-34. Wilhelm and junior Sara Wemlinger each finished with a team-high 12 points. Wilhelm also pulled down a team-high 10 rebounds for the double-double. Wemlinger grabbed six rebounds and tallied three steals, while junior Courtney Bergheger added four points, four assists and three steals. Other contributors for the Saints included senior Toni Picerno (6 points, 7 rebounds, 2 steals) and junior Megan McCabe (6 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists). The Bears had two players record a double-double. Zoe Unruh finished with 15 points and 11 rebounds, and Kathryn Berger tallied 15 points and 10 rebounds. Dacanay dished out a game-high seven assists, while Jill Brandt had 10 points, four rebounds and four assists. Maryville will return to action on Thursday, December 27, when they take on Rivier College at the Surf ‘N Slam Tournament in San Diego, Calif.
