Nebraska Wesleyan Edges Westminster in Rubber Match

FULTON, Mo. - Westminster baseball lost the rubber match to Nebraska Wesleyan to fall 2-1 in the season-opening series.

Westminster begins the season 1-2. 

Ryan Gvillo opened on the mound for the Blue Jays, pitching three innings. In the second, he gave up a three-run homer to give the Prairie Wolves a 3-0 advantage. 

Westminster got on the board in the fourth inning, starting with a single up the middle from Nick Cessna. Nick Bohlmann drove him in to earn one run back for Westminster. 

Thomas Kinney entered the game to pitch the fourth inning. He went four innings, giving up two runs and striking out five. 

Westminster traded runs with the Prairie Wolves in the fifth inning. After an RBI single from Nick Cessna to score Adam Mundle, making the score 4-2. 

In the seventh, Nebraska Wesleyan added another run, but Westminster added another of their own in the same inning on a Tanner Branneky RBI double to score Blake Strebler

Strebler kickstarted an offensive flurry in the bottom of the ninth to attempt to come back from a 6-3 deficit. He hit the Blue Jays first homerun of the season to make the score 6-4, but it wasn't enough for a comeback. 

Strebler led the team offensively, going 4-5 from the plate, scoring two runs, and hitting one homerun. 

Westminster returns to action Sunday, March 5 for a doubleheader against Robert Morris - Springfield. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
