Gorloks step up defense in 54-49 win over Fontbonne

(St. Louis, Mo.) – In a very tightly contested and mostly defensive ball game the Webster Gorloks used a 20-5 run over the final 11 minutes to come back from a 10 point deficit to defeat Fontbonne on Wednesday evening at Webster University. WU snapped the Griffins 13 game winning streak and in turn won its ninth straight game and 10th in its last 11.

The Gorloks (14-5, 10-0 SLIAC) opened the game by scoring nine of the first 11 points in the opening four minutes while holding Fontbonne (15-4, 9-2 SLIAC) to only one field goal in its first eight attempts. The pace started to settle and the Griffins tied the game at 11 at the 12:26 mark, Webster retook the lead 14-11 and the game was turned over to the defenses with neither side being able to score for nearly three minutes. The Griffins took their first lead of the game on a pair of Josh Branch threes, but WU countered retaking the lead at 21-19 on a Tyler Tiemann three-pointer. Fontbonne would end the half however by scoring six of the final eight points to head into intermission with a 25-23 lead.
Brad Robinson and Darin Hoggatt had six points apiece to lead the Gorloks in the frame while Tiemann chipped in with five. Branch led the Griffins with six points.

The opening few minutes were a see-saw affair with a pair of ties and lead changes. Fontbonne took control of the game at the 14:46 mark proceeding to score on an 11-2 run to open up a 44-34 advantage midway through the frame. From there Webster’s defense took over holding the Griffins to only one field goal over the final 11 minutes and were able to get back in the game behind the three-point shooting of Corey Kuhn, who had 11 points in the run, tying the game at 46 with 1:55 to play. After a steal by Ryan Turk WU retook the lead on a Josue’ Whitcomb lay-up almost 0:40 later. Fontbonne had a chance to tie the game but Brian Fogerty missed a lay-up and Whitcomb took the outlet pass from Turk to extend the lead to 50-46 with a half minute to play. After an Abyu Abozen three cut the lead to one Whitcomb ran down an inbounds pass and laid in an uncontested lay-up pushing the margin back to three. The Griffins had a couple of chances to tie the game with three’s in the closing seconds but were off the mark and Webster sealed the win with a pair of Turk free throws with 0:01.6 to go.

Kuhn had 13 points to lead the way for Webster and was joined in double figures by Robinson with 10. Branch had 13 points to lead three Fontbonne players in double digits. Fogerty finished with 12 while Abozen had 10.
