ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The baseball team returned to action with a single game against Washington-St. Louis on Wednesday and were topped 3-2 in a tightly contested game.

Bryce Pearce started the game on the mound for the Panthers and went five innings, only allowing a second inning run while striking out five.

The Panthers came from behind to tie the game in the top of the sixth when an RBI groundout by Travis Ralls pushed Jesse Getz across the plate to knot the game at 1-all.

Washington immediately took the lead back when they scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth off reliever Logan Murphy who was saddled with the loss.

Greenville cut the deficit to one in the top of the seventh when a line drive to right field by Joe Wood dropped in the front of the fielder who threw Wood out at first base.  Austin Marsh scored on the play.

In the ninth inning, the Panthers threatened with a runner on second base and one-out. An infield hit by Klaiton Wolff would have put runners at the corners, but Greenville's pinch runner Andrew Torbeck overran third base and got caught in a run-down before being tagged out at the plate.

Greenville managed to put another runner on base with a single by Wood, but Tucker Rappe struck out to end the game with runners on first and second.

The Greenville offense was led by Wolff who went 3-for-4 at the plate.  Marsh was 2-for-3.

The Panthers (0-2) host Dubuque on Friday at Robert E. Smith Field in a game that begins at 3 p.m.
