GREENVILLE, Ill. - Westminster women's basketball posted its second win of weekend, an 84-78 win over Millikin, to end the weekend 2-0.
The Blue Jays start the season 2-0 with the win.
"This was a complete team effort today and all weekend," said Westminster Head Coach James Arnold. "We are still a work in progress but we are starting to see some things click."
Mirrakohl Johnson had another strong game, recording her first double-double of the season with 17 points and 12 rebounds.
After a first quarter that featured three ties and five lead changes, Westminster came out ahead 19-18 after the first 10 minutes of play, including six points from Kendahl Adams.
Westminster opened the second quarter with a 10-3 run started by a jump shot from Grace Archambault. Back-toback three-pointers from Mikalyn Callahan boosted Westminster to a 29-23 lead with 7:23 left in the half. Grace Archambault added three more points and Callahan hit yet another three-pointer to close out the half with the Blue Jays on top 43-28. Westminster held Millikin to just 10 points in the second quarter, outscoring the Big Blue 24-10.
Johnson kept the offensive attack going for Westminster in the third quarter, hitting a jump shot in the Blue Jays' first possession. Back-to-back three pointers from Adams gave Westminster its largest lead of the game at 17 points. A made basket from Jahne Williams ended the third quarter with a 15-point lead for Westminster.
In the fourth quarter, Westminster let the Big Blue creep back into the game as they came back within 10 points with eight minutes to play. A Big Blue three-pointer with 7:39 remaining gave Westminster just an eight point lead. The Blue Jays continued to hold the lead despite Millikin's efforts to make a late comeback, coming as close as three points. Westminster, however, never relinquished the lead.
Westminster made 13 straight freethrows down the stretch, including four each from Payton Beeler and Kelsey Ray.
Four players for Westminster posted double-digit scoring figures, including Adams with 18 to lead the team, adding seven assists. Along with Johnson's 17 points, Callahan added 14 points and Archambault added 12.
"I'm super impressed with our ability to make adjustments and execute our game plan," said Arnold. "Both nights, we had frshman on the floor in crunch time and they performed well. It was a great team effort this weekend."
Westminster stays on the road for an exhibition contest Tuesday against NCAA Division I Evansville.
