Gorloks use strong second half to win 11th straight, over Greenville, 82-64

(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Webster Gorloks used a strong second half push to knock off Greenville 82-64 on Wednesday evening at Webster University. With the win Webster won its 11th straight game setting a new school record and won its 17th straight SLIAC regular season game.

The Gorloks (16-5, 12-0 SLIAC) and Greenville (11-10, 6-6 SLIAC) played an up tempo game in the first half with both sides shooting the ball well 41 percent (12-of-29) for WU and 15-of-26 (58 percent) for GC. The opening frame was a seesaw battle which saw 11 ties and five lead changes through the first 13 plus minutes of the opening stanza before the Panthers went on an 8-0 spurt to grab their largest lead of the night. Webster, however, cut the lead to two and had a chance to tie the score but Ryan Turk’s jumper right before the half came up short sending Greenville to the break with a 38-36 lead.
Ben Cochran had the hot hand for GC with 15 points on 6-of-7 shooting including a trio of threes to lead all scorers. Corey Kuhn had nine points to lead WU while Doug Stiegemeier had seven and Turk finished with six.

The Gorloks came out of the intermission break on fire knocking down seven of their first eight shots to regain the lead not quite three minutes in, it would be the last time they trailed all night. WU pushed its lead to nine points about midway through the frame but Greenville whittled the lead back to three a couple of minutes later, but the Gorloks took control of the game with a 16-1 run highlighted by nine points by Turk to pull away and eventually lead by 20 before Greenville got a late bucket for the final margin.

Webster shot 19-of-29 from the floor (66 percent) in the second half while holding the Panthers to only 40 percent (10-of-25) from the field but more importantly allowed only two threes in the stanza compared to seven in the first half.

Turk led all scorers with a game high 25 and was joined in double figures by Kuhn with 14, Darin Hoggatt dropped in 11 while Stiegemeier added 10 more.

Cochran had 24 points to lead Greenville while LaPhonso Ellis finished with 10.
