Baseball downs Eureka in both ends of Friday doubleheader

EUREKA, Ill. - The baseball team won both ends of a doubleheader on Friday against Eureka, taking a 16-3 win in seven innings in game one and holding on for a 7-6 win in game two.

Game 1

The Panthers scored six runs in both the second and third innings to build a 12-0 lead after three innings and roll to a 16-3 seven-inning win in game one.

Drew Frey and Nathan Eye each went 3-for-4 for the Panthers. Frey scored three runs and drove in two runs while Eye crossed home twice and batted in four runs.

Eye hit a three-run homer in the fifth inning.

George Schneider, Brexton Beard, Rhett Pennington, and Tanner Gerdes each scored two runs for GU, and Snyder Pennington posted two RBI.

Luke Fleener went the distance on the mound only allowing three runs on five hits and fanning 10 batters.

Game 2

The Panthers and Red Devils played a tight game in the second half of the twin bill, but the Panthers ultimately came out on top 7-6.

Eureka led 2-0 after the first inning, 2-1 after two innings, and 3-1 after four innings.

Schneider homered to cut the lead to 3-2 in the top of the fifth, but Eureka tacked on two runs to take a 5-2 lead into the top of the sixth.

In Greenville's half of the sixth inning, GU plated four runs. The Panthers received a sacrifice fly from Frey and then a clutch three-run home run from Landon Mokris to take the lead.

Jacob Sutton delivered an RBI single in the seventh inning to give Greenville a 7-5 lead, and Eureka only scratched out one more run.

Sutton finished the game with three hits for the Panthers, and R. Pennington, S. Pennington, Logan Doll, and Gerdes each had two.

Braden Maltbie started for the Panthers and worked into the fifth inning, permitting five runs on six hits with five strikeouts.

Jaxen Gibson gained the win in relief with 1.2 scoreless innings.

Dylan Boehm permitted an unearned run in the eighth inning after making it through the seventh unscathed.

Ian Wilson and Gerdes each provided one scoreless inning of relief with Gerdes earning the save.

Next Up

The Panthers (13-14, 7-4 SLIAC) will complete the series with Eureka on Saturday afternoon.
