JOPLIN, Mo. — Maryville University’s men’s basketball team continued to be plagued by turnovers, as they turned the ball over 30 times in a 83-51 loss to NCAA Division II Pittsburg State University at the Missouri Southern Classic hosted by Missouri Southern State University. The loss is the fourth consecutive for the Saints, who fall to 1-4 overall.

Maryville held an early lead, but Pittsburg State took over for good at the 13:57 mark in the first half. The Saints were able to keep their deficit to single digits up until the final five minutes of the half, as the Gorillas extended their lead to 15 points heading into halftime.

Junior Teddy McGrath converted on a three-point play at the 16:30 mark in the second half to get Maryville within 11 points of the lead, but
Pittsburg State performed well on offense, sinking 19-of-35 (.543) from the field for the half. The Gorillas finished 34-of-67 (.507) from the field, while the Saints were only 18-of-45 (.400) for the game. Pittsburg State also out rebounded Maryville 39-27.

McGrath led the Saints with 13 points on 5-of-9 shooting from the field and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe. Fellow juniors Drew Simmons and Aaron Steinke were the only other Saints players to score in double figures, as they finished with 12 and 10 points respectively. Sophomore Matt Deimeke grabbed a team-high five rebounds, while Simmons and sophomore Jared McCoy added four rebounds apiece.

Pittsburg State’s Cory Abercrombie shot 13-of-21 from the floor and 4-of-5 from the charity stripe to record a game-high 30 points. Nathan Lang added 14 points and a game-high seven rebounds, and Michael Hutchingson chipped in with 13 points, four rebounds and four assists.

The Saints will enjoy some time off before returning to competition on Wednesday, December 5. Maryville will travel to Fulton, Mo., to take on Westminster College (Mo.) in their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) opener.
