Turk's three lifts Gorloks past Saints, 58-57

(St. Louis, Mo.) – Ryan Turk’s three point basket with 20.4 seconds left capped a furious 10-0 rally in the final two minutes lifting the Webster Gorloks to a 58-57 win over Maryville, clinching the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference title, at Maryville on Wednesday evening.

The Gorloks (18-5, 14-0 SLIAC) trailed 57-48 with a little more than two minutes play when they began their comeback. Brad Robinson got it started with a pair of free throws to cut the lead to seven, after the Saints (10-13, 7-7 SLIAC) missed a lay-up Josue' Whitcomb went to the line for a pair and after making the first he missed the second but out hustled everyone on the court and picked up the loose ball and was fouled again. This time he sank both free tosses to pull WU within 57-53 at the 1:42 mark. On the ensuing possession he forced a Maryville turnover and once again was fouled, sending him to the line for another two shot foul, and making both to make it a two point game. After a Maryville timeout the Gorloks tightened the defensive reigns forcing a 10 second call against the Saints but were unable to capitalize on the turnover when Darin Hoggatt’s jumper was off the mark and the rebound went back to Maryville. Webster played good solid defense with the clock winding down and Turk was able to force a steal setting up the final dramatics. The Saints had one final chance to win it but Tyler Saxton’s three point attempt with 0:04 left was long but MU got the rebound but couldn’t get another shot away in time.

Webster won the game despite shooting a season low 31 percent (20-of-65) from the field. Turk finished with 13 points leading the Gorloks while Whitcomb and Hoggatt had 11 apiece.

Teddy McGrath and Matt Baker led the way for Maryville with 15 and 14 points respectively.
WU started fast out of the blocks racing out to a 15-7 lead but the Saints were able to hang tough taking their first lead of the night 20-19 at the 7:45 mark. Webster retook the lead at 22-20 before Maryville finished the frame on a 10-2 run to head into the break up 30-24.

The Saints controlled the game for most of the second half building their lead to as many as 14 points on three different occasions with the last one coming at 51-37 with 8:21 remaining. From that point on Maryville scored only six points the remainder of the way making only three shots from the floor and missed some free throws down the stretch.
