Gorloks cruise past Blackburn, 82-56

(Carlinville, Ill.) – The Webster University Gorloks shot 66 percent (19-of-29) in the second half on its way to an 82-56 win over Blackburn College on Saturday afternoon in Carlinville, Ill. Webster has now won 10 straight games and 11 of its last 12.

    The Gorloks (15-5, 11-0 SLIAC) struggled against Blackburn’s (3-16, 1-11 SLIAC) zone defense in the first half making only 14-of-36 shots (39 percent) and trailed for almost the first seven minutes of the game. WU found its offensive rhythm going on a 10-0 run turning a three point deficit into a seven point advantage, and would not trail again, as Robby Meeh provided a huge spark off the bench accounting for five points in the spurt. The Beavers were able to stay in the game thanks to their three-point shooting knocking down 4-of-5 (80 percent) and trailed by only six with about six minutes to play in the opening frame. Webster, however, closed the stanza by scoring seven of the final 10 points to head into the locker room with a 39-29 lead.

    Meeh and Ryan Turk led the way with seven points apiece in the frame while Josue Whitcomb and Brad Robinson had five each. Bryan Waters had the hot hand for Blackburn with eight points.
The Gorloks made some adjustments at halftime and started getting the ball inside the Beaver’s zone with dribble penetration and began to take control early in the second half expanding their halftime lead to 19 points almost 3:30 minutes in. Turk knocked down his first three shots in the stanza for a quick seven points while dishing out a pair of assists and recording a steal. WU’s defense tightened up as well holding Blackburn to just 39 percent (11-of-28) shooting, out rebounded them by a 19-11 count and forced 12 turnovers resulting in 15 points. Webster built its lead to as big as 26 with 5:00 minutes remaining by that point both sides had its back-ups in and just traded baskets for the remainder of the game.

    Turk had a game high 19 points to lead the way for the Gorloks. Meeh and Darin Hoggatt had 13 apiece while Kyle Regan chipped in with seven. Meeh also had a game high nine rebounds. After his hot shooting in the first half Webster held Waters to only five second half points as he led the way for the Beavers with 13. Tommy Baro and Blake Doehring had 10 each.
