Men's soccer led by surge of five goals in second half of 7-1 win against Eureka

EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. - The men's soccer team controlled their match against Eureka on Saturday night, scoring five second half goals and collecting a 7-1 win.

The Panthers, who played 28 men in the match, led 2-0 at halftime and saw their clean sheet spoiled early in the second half when Eureka cut the deficit to 2-1.  However, the goal by Eureka fueled the Panther scoring outslaught, and the Panthers added five goals in an 18 minute span of the second half.

Greenville opened the match scoring in the 26th minute with a goal from Juan Garcia. In the 31st minute, Pablo Valverde added his first of two goals, giving the Panthers a 2-0 lead.

Facing a slim 2-1 lead in the opening minutes of the second half, Valverde gave Greenville another goal in the 60th minute, and Jared McPeek provided his team-leading 11th goal of the season in the 63rd minute.

Before the night was over, Benn Jane, Henrique Rodrigues, and Enrique Yanguas tallied GU goals.

In addition to his match-high two goals, Valverde also added an assist. Luis Duran posted two assists in the match.

Greenville outshot Eureka 41-3, gathering a 16-0 shot advantage in the first half and a 25-3 lead in the second half. The Panthers featured a 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Vebber allowed one goal in over 66 minutes of action, and Gerardo Lopez tallied two saves in a little more than 23 minutes.

The Panthers (8-7, 6-3 SLIAC) host Webster on Monday at 5 p.m. in a rescheduled match
