Women's Soccer Starts Season With 2-1 Win Over Millikin

Despite multiple rain delays, the Westminster women's soccer team finished their season opener with a 2-1 victory over Millikin University on Tuesday evening. The Blue Jays begin the 2015 campaign with a 1-0 record. 

Millikin took an early lead with a goal 6:38 into the game. The Blue Jays took five shots throughout the first half including three shots on goal by freshman Kaely Fitterling, senior Grace Sanford and sophomore Honor Kehde

The Blue Jays experienced their first rain delay at halftime, but resumed play at 5:48 p.m. Senior Ashley Schimmel scored a goal off a loose ball in front of the net with the assist from freshman Courtney Whitlock in the 57th minute to knot the game at 1-1. 

The Blue Jays scored again in the 64th minute off a goal from sophomore Morgan Henry to take the 2-1 lead. Whitlock once again had the assist. The Blue Jays had one shot on goal before play was halted again due to the weather. 

Play resumed at 8:25 p.m. and started up again in the 67th minute. The Blue Jays took one more shot on goal in the game, but Millikin's goalkeeper was there to stop it. 

Junior goalkeeper Ellen Woolsey grabbed the win in goal. 

The Blue Jays travel to Jacksonville, Illinois this weekend to play Lakeland College on Saturday, September 5, and Illniois College on Sunday, September 6.
