Softball splits trip to Fontbonne

ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- The softball team won once in their doubleheader against Fontbonne on Wednesday night.  Greenville lost 5-1 in game one and earned a 7-6 triumph in game two.

Fontbonne took control of game one early with three unearned runs in the bottom of the first off starter Caitie Opp.

The Panthers received a solo home run from Megan Barrett in the fifth inning to cut the score to 3-1, but Fontbonne got that run back in the bottom of the fifth and scored again in the sixth.

Opp pitched 4.2 innings allowing four unearned runs and struck out two.

Game two went the Panthers way as they never trailed.

Greenville received an RBI groundout from Becca Oldham in the first inning, and she added an RBI single in the third to give GU a 2-0 lead.

Fontbonne cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the third.

In the fourth inning, Barrett and Amanda Atteberry crossed the plate on a wild pitch, and Oldham scored in the fifth after an error.

Fontbonne brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but reliever Cayla Speaks extinguished the flames to gain a save.

Atteberry and Kendall Farr both had two hits for GU.

Maegan Stone was the winning pitcher as she started and pitched 6.2 innings.  She struck out two and permitted five earned runs.

The Panthers (8-13, 6-3 SLIAC) return home Thursday for a doubleheader against Washington-St. Louis.
