Westminster Men's Basketball Powers Past Principia

ELSAH, Ill. – The Westminster men's basketball team snapped a two-game skid with a 93-87 win over Principia on Tuesday night. The Blue Jays improve to 8-11 overall and 7-6 in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference with tonight's victory.

Westminster got off to a 9-3 start thanks to three-pointers from Landon Harrison, Emil Spriggs, and Ethan Thompson but the Panthers answered with six straight points to tie the game at 9-all. Jaxon Althaus broke the tie with a layup and the Blue Jays remained in the lead until Principia tied the game at 20-20 with 9:18 to play in the half. The seesaw battle continued throughout the rest of the half until Althaus gave the Blue Jays a five-point lead by making a pair of threes and a layup. The Panthers cut the lead to three points with a layup in the final minute to make the score 41-38 going into the intermission. Althaus finished the first half with 20 points to lead all players.

Although the Panthers were able to cut the Westminster lead to only one or two possessions late in the game, the Blue Jays never relinquished their lead and held off Principia to take the game 93-87. Clutch free throw shooting Harrison in the final minute of the game help to stave off the Principia comeback. Harrison went 4-4 from the free-throw stripe in the closing minute and 11-12 on the day.

Harrison finished the game with 35 points, 26 of which came in the second half, and pulled down 10 rebounds. Althaus finished with 30 points and Thompson scored 10 points.

The Blue Jays will return to action Saturday afternoon at 3:00 PM at Blackburn.
