Mateo Overtime Goal Lifts Blue Jays Over Illinois College

FULTON, Mo. - Mauricio Mateo netted a goal in the 93rd minute to give the Blue Jays a 2-1 win over Illinois College. 

Westminster improves to 9-3-1 on the year with the nonconference win. 

The Blue Jays fell behind early with a goal from Illinois College in the 23rd minute. Despite dominating the offensive flow of the game, both teams went into the half with the score 1-0 in favor of Illinois College. 

Westminster again showed its offensive prowess in the second half, controlling the pace of play. Daniel Barone eventually tied the game at one goal apiece in the 67th minute by chasing a rebound and putting it in the back of the net. 

Ty Clearwater of Illinois College made several saves in order to push the game into overtime, but Mateo quickly ended the match with his goal to seal the victory for the Blue Jays. 

Westminster outshot Illinois College 21-3. Ben Chesher made one save on the day. 

"Our guys showed character tonight by battling back from being down 1-0," said Westminster Head Coach Adam Galla. "We created a bunch of opportunities and we were able to put one away in overtime."

Westminster returns to SLIAC play with a game on senior night against Blackburn at 7 p.m.
