Season Stats

(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Webster Gorloks scored the final five points in the second overtime to pull out a 71-68 win over Eureka on Saturday afternoon at Grant Gym. Webster had an opportunity to win the game in regulation but made only three of its final seven attempts at the charity stripe which allowed EC to tie the game and force the overtime.

The Gorloks (11-13, 5-10 SLIAC) shot the ball poorly in the opening period making only 5-of-19 attempts and did not record a field in the final nine minutes of the frame but still went into the locker room with a 26-24 lead thanks to making 16-of-19 free throws. The frame was one of runs by both sides WU scored the first six points of the game but Eureka came back and tied the game at 8-8 at the 13 minute mark then took a five point lead almost two minutes later. Webster responded with a 13-0 run of its own taking its biggest lead of the night at 21-13 with 7 minutes to play. The Red Devils refused to go away tying the game again at 21 with less than four minutes to go before WU pushed the lead back to five at the 1:50 mark. Brittany Gardner’s three with 0:14 seconds remaining was the final bucket of the half.

Julie McGirl had 12 points in the frame to lead all scorers while Gardner had 10 to lead Eureka.

The game was a see-saw affair in the second period with each side answering basket for basket until Webster put a little a run together to take a six point lead at the 10:53 mark. Just like in the first half EC continued to battle eventually retaking the lead at 41-40 three minutes later, WU answered right back though on a lay-up by Erin Chesnek to regain the advantage. From that point Eureka began to take control over the next three minutes building its lead to 50-44 at the 3:45 mark. This time it was the Gorloks who refused to go away scoring seven straight points and retaking the lead 51-50 on a McGirl lay-up with 0:53 remaining. The Red Devils got the ball back and appeared to retake the lead but Nicole Fisher was called for a charge with 0:32 left giving Webster back the ball. With EC forced to foul they sent Michelle McQueen to the line with 0:24 left but she missed the front end of a one-and-one and the Red Devils got the rebound for the chance to win the game but another offensive foul with 0:18 left and an ensuing technical foul on the Eureka bench gave the Gorloks the chance to ice the game but McGirl made only one of the two technical shots to put WU up 52-50 then McQueen went back to the line and split a pair making it 53-50. EC cut the lead to one on a Shelby Naab jumper with 0:11 to go and again the Devils had to foul this time sending Katy Meyer to the line who again split a pair of free tosses to extend the lead back to two. Eureka tied the game on a Naab lay-up with 0:02 remaining and then McQueen’s three at the buzzer was off the mark forcing the overtime.

Meyer’s lay-up just 0:12 into the first overtime gave the Gorloks a short lived 56-54 lead before Nicole Ropp’s three gave the lead back to the Red Devils at 57-56. EC extended its lead to a bucket on a Gardner free throw, but McQueen hit a three pointer giving Webster back a 59-58 lead with 2:28 to play. EC responded by scoring the next four points and held a three point lead with 0:55 to go but McQueen had another huge shot in her burying a deep three pointer to tie the game with 0:29 remaining. WU turned up the pressure on the defensive end when McQueen stole the ball giving it a chance to win the game but Gwen Goedeker’s shot from the corner was blocked and the ball went out of bounds back to Webster. On the inbounds play McGirl fired up a long three that was off the mark forcing the second overtime.

Ropp’s lay-up off the opening tip of the second OT put Eureka back up by two but the Gorloks tied the game up on a pair of free throws by Chesnek at 64-64. The game was scoreless for the next two minutes then another lay-up by Naab gave Eureka back the lead at 66-64 again WU refused to fold tying the game on a pair of free throws by Jenny Venegoni with 1:37 to play. A jumper by Gardner just 0:14 later put the Red Devils back up two, its final points of the game, Webster had a chance to tie the game but Chesnek was only able to convert one of her two foul attempts and it still trailed by one with 1:04 remaining. After a missed jumper by Naab the Gorloks got the rebound and on the ensuing possession retook the lead at 69-68 on a pair of Meyer free throws. After a Venegoni steal she was fouled and went to the line where she made both charity tosses but the second one was wiped off on a lane violation. Webster’s defense again did the job forcing another turnover with 0:08 left and McQueen had the chance to ice the game but again was only able to make 1-of-2 leaving the door open for Eureka, but this time Naab was unable to connect on three that would have tied the game and Venegoni secured the rebound and the game for Webster.

McGirl had a game high 20 points and 13 rebounds leading the way for WU and was joined in double figures by Chesnek with 15, Meyer contributed 12 while McQueen finished with 11.

Gardner had led four EC players in double figures with 19 points. She was joined by Fisher with 15, Naab dropped in 12 while Brandi Payne finished with 10.

Webster concludes its season with a home game against Westminster on Tuesday evening beginning at 6 p.m.
