SAN DIEGO, Calif
The Maryville University women's basketball team defeated Rivier College 84-66 in the first round of the Surf 'N Slam Tournament hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University. The Saints, who improve to 4-2 overall, had four players score in double figures and forced a total of 40 turnovers in the victory. After the lead traded hands a few times in the first half, Maryville took a nine point lead heading into halftime after a 10-4 run to end the half. The Saints maintained their momentum in the second half and increased their lead to as many as 28 points. They held Rivier to 0-of-9 shooting from three-point range in the second half and 3-of-17 (.176) for the game. Maryville shot 39.7 percent (31-of-78) from the field, 34.6 percent (9-of-26) from behind the arc and 65.0 percent (13-of-20) from the charity stripe. Despite the 17-point victory, Maryville was out rebounded 53-38. Junior Allie Wilhelm recorded a double-double and led the Saints with a team-high 18 points and 10 rebounds. Fellow junior Kim Douglas added 16 points on 5-of-9 (.556) shooting from the field, including 4-of-6 (.667) from behind the arc and 2-of-2 (1.000) from the free throw line. Also scoring in double figures for the Saints were junior Courtney Bergheger and Sara Wemlinger with 10 and 13 points respectively. Bergheger added four steals and two assists, while senior Toni Picerno dished out a team-high four assists and added two steals. Rivier was led by Jessica Mellen with 18 points. Sadie Hardiman grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds, and Peggy Dalton and Mellen added 10 and eight rebounds respectively. The Saints will now face No. 15 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point tomorrow at 4:00 pm (PST) in the second round of the Surf 'N Slam Tournament.
