ST. LOUIS, Mo.
The No. 1 ranked Washington University men’s basketball team scored the first 14 points of the game en route to a 85-59 victory at Maryville University on Tuesday night at Maloney Arena in Senior Danny O’Boyle came off the bench to score 21 points and hit a career-high seven three-pointers. Senior Troy Ruths added 10 points in the victory, moving past Jim Barton (1954-57) into 10th place on the all-time scoring list with 1,216 career points.
Washington U. held Maryville scoreless for the first 5:23 of the game, as the Saints were unsuccessful on their first eight shots. Back-to-back lay-ups by junior Tyler Nading and sophomore Zach Kelly pushed the Bears’ lead to 18-2 with 12:30 remaining in the first half.
Sophomore Aaron Thompson nailed a deep three-pointer from the corner, and then scored on a fast-break lay-up on an assist from junior Sean Wallis to push the lead to 27-11. O’Boyle came off the bench for the Bears midway through the first half and took over the game. He drained four three-pointers in a span of 1:50 to extend the Bears’ lead to 41-15.
Washington U. led 45-27 at halftime after shooting 56.3 percent (18-32) from the field. O’Boyle hit 4-of-6 from beyond the arc to lead the Bears with 12 points in the opening half.
Washington University opened the second half on an 8-2 run, capped by a three-pointer by Thompson from the corner, to give the Bears a 54-29 lead. O’Boyle caught fire again early in the second half, hitting three-straight beyond the arc in a span of 1:05, to put the game out of reach at 65-35.
Wallis went down at the 7:27 mark in the first half and did not return. He finished the game with five points and five assists in 10 minutes played.
Washington University, which improved to 22-6 all-time against Maryville, returns to action at the Washington University/Webster Tournament this weekend held at Webster University. The Bears will take on No. 5 Augustana College on Saturday at 1 p.m., and University of Wisconsin-Platteville on Sunday at 2 p.m.
