Men's soccer opens season with shutout

ORANGE, Calif. –The Chapman University men's soccer team opened up its 2016 season with a physical 3-0 win over Fontbonne University on Friday night at Wilson Field. In the Panthers home opener, Chapman netted three goals less than five minutes apart to kick off its season with a shutout.

Senior Marco Saglimbeni knocked in the Panthers game-winning goal from less than 10-yards out following a free kick to help the Panthers to a 1-0 lead at the 28 minute mark.

Just three minutes later, freshman Jarod Matteoni struck net off a cross from junior Elliott Braund to lift the Panthers to a 2-0 lead. Immediately following Matteoni's first career goal, senior Jake Sarmiento knocked in the Panthers third goal off a deflected diving save from the Griffins' goalkeeper to push Chapman to a 3-0 win.

In a physical match, with eight yellow cards, the Panthers managed 14 shots, including six on goal. The Chapman defense held the Griffins to just seven shots.

Junior GK Sean Augustine secured his first win of the season after 70 minutes in the net. While junior GK Matt Deemer preserved the Panthers shutout with a leaping save with less than ten minutes left in the match.

The Panthers look to build on their opening win in their next home match against Whitman at 11 a.m. on Monday at Wilson Field. Chapman will then travel to La Verne for its first SCIAC match of the season on Wednesday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
