Gorloks escape Principia's Upset Bid

(St. Louis, Mo.) – The Webster University Gorloks survived an upset scare from the Principia Panthers 69-63 on Saturday afternoon at Grant Gym. Webster won the game despite shooting only 35 percent (8-of-23) in the second half.
   
    The Gorloks (13-5, 9-0 SLIAC) fell behind 6-0 quickly on threes from Chris Watts and Todd Zimmerman and still trailed by four eight minutes into the game. WU got back into the game behind the play of Corey Kuhn who scored seven points in a pivotal run before proceeding to run off 10 straight points to take its first lead of the contest. The shooting of Zimmerman and Watts kept the Panthers (2-13, 1-9 SLIAC) in the game for a majority of the half before Webster proceeded to score 10 of the final 11 points of the half to take a 39-28 lead into the break. Kuhn led the way with 12 points in the half and Brad Robinson had 10. The Gorloks shot 46 percent in the half and out rebounded the Panthers by a 19-11 margin.
   
    WU opened the second half with a three by Ryan Turk to extend its lead to 14 points but Principia refused to go away and retook the lead 49-46 on another Zimmerman three pointer with 12:51 to play. The final 10 minutes was a see-saw affair with six ties and seven lead changes with each side answering basket for basket. The Gorloks trailed 59-57 with 2:30 to go before proceeding to go on a 10-1 run taking a seven point lead with 0:10 left, after Zimmerman’s sixth three of the contest cut the lead to four, Turk slammed the door shut with a pair of free throws to ice the victory.
Webster finished the game shooting 42 percent (22-of-53) but managed to out rebound the Panthers by a 36-29 margin which resulted in a 12-3 edge in second chance points. The bench came up huge for WU as it scored 25 points compared to only six for PC.

    Robinson recorded his sixth double-double of the season with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Kuhn added 13, Josue’ Whitcomb chipped in with 12 while Turk and Steve Hrdlicka each finished with 10 points.

    Zimmerman led the way for Principia with 25 points on 9-of-13 shooting and was 6-for-8 from long distance. Watts added 14 and Kyle Johnson had 11.
