Junior Sara Wemlinger poured in a career-high 27 points to help lead the Maryville University women’s basketball team to a 95-75 victory on the road at Westminster College (Mo.) in their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) opener. The win continues the Saints regular season conference win streak, which dates back to the 2003-04 season and now stands at 61 games.
Wemlinger finished 11-of-23 (.478) from the floor, including 4-of-12 (.333) from three-point range to score the game-high and improve Maryville’s record to 2-1 overall and 1-0 in the SLIAC. She also had four rebounds, four steals and three assists in 30 minutes on the floor.
Senior Toni Picerno and juniors Courtney Bergheger and Kim Douglas also scored in double figures. Picerno shot 6-of-10 (.600) from the floor and 6-of-7 (.857) from the charity stripe to finish with 19 points. Bergheger scored in double digits for the third consecutive game, recording 18 points on 8-of-13 (.615) shooting from the field, while Douglas added 10 points.
Picerno and Bergheger led the Saints in rebounding by pulling down a game-high seven rebounds apiece. Bergheger also had four assists and five steals. Junior Megan McCabe, who sat out Maryville’s first two games of the season due to injury, chipped in with six rebounds, four points and three steals.
As a team Maryville shot 48.7 percent (37-of-76) from the field, including 52.5 percent (21-of-40) in the first half. The Saints also finished 36.0 percent (9-of-25) from behind the arc and 63.2 percent (12-of-19) from the free throw line.
Westminster had two players score in double figures. Markie England led the Blue Jays with 16 points and five rebounds. Heather Collums added 12 points and three assists, while Emily Masso grabbed seven rebounds.
The Saints forced a total of 28 turnovers for the game, while committing only 15 turnovers themselves.
Maryville will return to conference action this Saturday, December 8, when they travel to Carlinville, Ill., for a 3:00 pm SLIAC game with the Beavers of Blackburn College.
