Eureka Ends Spring Trip With Losses at Louisiana College

PINEVILLE, La. – The Eureka College baseball team played the final two games of its seven-game spring trip through the south on Sunday, dropping both games of a non-conference doubleheader to Louisiana College in the finale of the Marler Ford Classic in Pineville, La. The Wildcats took the opener, 11-0, and also won game two, 12-2.

Louisiana College took control of game one early, plating five runs in the bottom of the first inning. The offense was more than enough for the LC pitching duo of Austin Thompson and Robinson, who combined to limit the Red Devils to one hit and one walk over 7.0 innings.

Freshman center fielder Braxten Ary (Manito, Ill./Midwest Central H.S.) had the Red Devils' lone hit in the opener, a double to leadoff the game.

In the nightcap, LC built a 4-0 lead after three innings before the visitors rallied. EC took advantage of LC defensive woes to score single tallies in the fourth and fifth innings and trim the deficit to 4-2. The Wildcats answered with a four-run fifth, highlighted by Seth Stevens's leadoff home run, to eventually pull away for the victory.

Newcomers Jake Carter (Carlinville, Ill./Carlinville H.S.) and Kyle Maki (Virginia, Minn./Virginia H.S.) had hits in the second game for EC.

Ary and Evan Smith (Moline, Ill./Moline H.S.) closed the seven-game trip with eight hits. Smith's led EC with a .400 batting average, .478 on-base percentage and .450 slugging percentage in six games and 23 plate appearances.

Eureka will return to campus Sunday night and have nine consecutive off-days before beginning the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference slate in the home opener at Henry Sand Field on March 22 against Blackburn. The Red Devils and Beavers will play a doubleheader scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
