DECATUR, Ill.
The Maryville University women’s basketball team suffered their first loss of the season as they were defeated 93-74 by nationally ranked No. 18 University of Wisconsin-Whitewater in the championship game of the Coaches vs. Cancer Tournament hosted by Millikin University.
Wis.-Whitewater (2-0) jumped out to an early lead, and Maryville (1-1) was able to keep their deficit to single digits for a majority of the first half. Junior Samantha Maines sank a three-point shot at the 16:11 mark in the first half to get the Saints within one point, but that would be as close as Maryville would get to taking over the lead. The Saints trailed by only five points with less than five minutes remaining to play in the half, but the Warhawks headed into halftime with a 17-point lead after finishing with a 16-4 run in the final four minutes.
Maryville saw their deficit continue to grow and trailed by as many as 22 points in the second half. Wis.-Whitewater was able to maintain a double digit lead the entire second half, only allowing the Saints within 14 points of the lead.
Maines was the leading scorer for Maryville, finishing with 14 points on 5-of-10 (.500) shooting from the field and 3-of-4 (.750) from the charity stripe. Juniors Courtney Bergheger and Sara Wemlinger added 13 points each, with Wemlinger also grabbing a team-high eight rebounds and three steals. Junior Allie Wilhelm tallied 12 points on 4-of-5 (.800) shooting from the field and 4-of-4 (1.000) from the free throw line.
Other contributors for the Saints include senior Toni Picerno and junior Tracy Freise. Picerno had nine points and seven rebounds, while Freise finished with nine points, five rebounds and two steals.
Wis.-Whitewater had two players record double digits in rebounding, and out rebounded the Saints 55-32. Tiffany Morton, who recorded a double-double, led the Warhawks with a game-high 21 points and 11 rebounds. Nicole Bundy chipped in with 15 points and five rebounds, while Meghan Schmidt and Lindsay Buechner had 12 and 11 points respectively.
Maryville finished the game with a 36.8 field goal percentage and only 23.5 percent from behind the arc. Wis.-Whitewater was 47.0 percent from the field and 40.0 percent from three-point range.
Bergheger was the lone Saints player named to the All-Tournament team. Joining her from the Warhawks were Morton and Kelsey Hendrickson.
The Saints will have 17 days off before returning to action on Wednesday, December 5. Head coach Chris Ellis and his squad will begin their quest for a fifth consecutive conference title when they travel to Fulton, Mo., to take on the Blue Jays of Westminster College (Mo.) in a 6:00 pm St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) game.
