WEBSTER GROVES, Misso
One day earlier the Vikings burned the nets in the first half during a 66-60 win over number one ranked Washington. On Sunday, November 25, it was the second half when Augustana had the hot hand and the result was an impressive 84-65 victory over Webster. The Vikings, ranked fifth in the pre-season NCAA Division III poll, have now won three straight to open the season for the third consecutive year.
In the win over Washington on Saturday, November 24 the Vikings shot 63 percent from the floor in building a 39-22 halftime advantage. Against Webster they weren't bad in the first half, shooting 48 percent on 12 of 25 en route to a 35-28 lead at intermission. In the second half, however, they were nearly unconscious as they connected on 18 of 26 from the floor for a sizzling 69 percent. Ironically, Augustana connected on just 59 percent (10-17) from the free throw line in the second half.
Senior Jordan Delp erupted for 22 points as he led five players in double figures for the balanced Viking attack. Juniors Chandlor Collins and Alex Washington each had 12 points while senior Dain Swetalla and junior Brett Wessels each had 10. Sophomore point guard Matt Pelton had an eye popping 11 assists without a turnover in 28 minutes of play.
The game was tied three times in the early going, including 6-6, before Augustana went on a 15-2 run that put the Vikings ahead 21-8 with 11:05 left in the first half. Junior Jeff Becker hit back-to-back three point field goals to punctuate the run.
Webster settled down and outscored Augustana 20-14 over the rest of the half to cut the lead to 35-28 at intermission. In the second half Collins scored the Vikings first four points and Augustana made eight of its first 11 shots. When Washington scored on a layup with 15:43 left in the game the margin was 17 points (53-36). The lead never got into single digits and with 7:08 left it had grown to 21 (73-52) after Delp drilled a three pointer.
Actually, both teams shot well in the second half as Webster hit 55 percent of its shots, making 16 of 29 but the Gorloks couldn't catch the Vikings. Darin Hoggatt led Webster, now 2-2 on the year, with 14 points and Luke Niebrugge was also in double digits with 11 points.
Collins led Augustana in rebounding with nine and the Vikings only had 11 turnovers in the game. The players off the Augustana bench shot a combined nine of 13 from the field.
The Vikings will be in action on Wednesday, November 28 at home in the Carver PE Center against Wisconsin-LaCrosse with tip-off set for 7:30 p.m.
