Long run dooms Gorloks in 85-55 loss to Fontbonne

(St. Louis, Mo.) –    The Webster Gorloks scored only one point in the final 7:15 of the first half as the Fontbonne Griffins used a 21-1 run on its way to an 85-55 victory on Wednesday evening at Grant Gym.

The Gorloks (9-10, 3-7 SLIAC) led for most of the first half before the Griffins (11-8, 9-2 SLIAC) battled back and tied the game at 23-23 at the 7:30 mark. WU retook the lead 26-23 on a Katy Meyer three but from there it was all Fontbonne as it scored 14 straight points to erase the deficit and 21 of the final 22 points to open up a 44-27 lead at half time. Defensively Webster had trouble containing the taller Griffins on the glass as it was out rebounded by a 15-9 margin while being outscored in the paint 14-2. Meyer had eight points to lead the Gorloks while Amber Karnes had eight to lead Fontbonne.

WU cut the deficit to 13 early in the second stanza but another long run by the Griffins pushed the lead to 20 points midway through the frame and it only got worse from there as Fontbonne would build its lead to 36 points before Webster scored the final six points of the contest. The Gorloks out shoot the Griffins in the frame 39 percent-to-34 percent but again were out rebounded by a wide margin 34-16 resulting in 17 second chance points for the Griffs. Fontbonne made its living at the line shooting 28 free tosses and making 22 of those compared to only 18 attempts and 11 makes for Webster.

Karnes and Katherine Kirby had 15 points apiece to lead all scorers and were joined in double figures by Kristin Chamberlain with 12 points, Heather McAllister had 11 while Michelle Reale dropped in 10.
Meyer finished with 15 points on 5-of-12 shooting to lead WU. Julie McGirl, Danielle Martin and Jenny Venegoni each had seven in the loss.
