Three Second Half Goals Push No. 4 WashU Past Fontbonne, Weaver Nets First On Season
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women’s soccer team opened its 2021 season with a tough 3-1 loss against No. 4 WashU.
ST. LOUIS, Mo.—The Fontbonne University women's soccer team opened its 2021 season with a tough 3-1 loss against No. 4 WashU.
Game Breakdown
It was a possession battle throughout the first half between both teams with WashU having a 5-0 shot advantage, though the Bears didn't find twine with Mary Beers making one save prior to halftime.
In the second half, WashU was able to break through in the 56th minute with Sydney Essler's pass going to Jess Shapiro, her shot was deflected off a Fontbonne player and into the back of the net for the 1-0 lead.
The Bears added onto its lead in the 71st minute when Emily Kaufman's pass from midfield found Erin Flynn. She one touched it to Jessica Greven and she buried it into the back left corner of the net extending the advantage to 2-0.
Less than four minutes later Greven struck again giving the Bears a 3-0 lead. The Griffins kept battling despite the deficit and were awarded a free kick outside the box after a WashU foul.
Kierstyn Weaver stepped into it and her shot went just over the outstreched arm of WashU goalie Sidney Conner for her first goal of the season. Despite, the Griffins continued efforts to try and mount a comeback it was the Bears going on for the two-goal win.

- Weaver's goal was her 19th in her career.
- Krystal Kohenskey added one shot.
- Mary Beers finished with two saves.
Up Next
The Griffins continue its home stretch next weekend when they'll take on Carthage next Saturday at 1 p.m. On Sunday, the team plays at WashU against Loras at 1 p.m., in the Wydown Classic.
