Westminster Volleyball Sweeps Iowa Wesleyan

GREENVILLE, Ill. – The Westminster volleyball team split a pair of SLIAC games on Saturday, defeating Iowa Wesleyan 3-0 and losing to Greenville 3-2. The Blue Jays are now 10-7 on the season and 8-2 in conference games.

The Blue Jays won the first match after defeating Iowa Wesleyan in three sets. Westminster won by scores of 25-18, 25-23 and 25-9. Ashley Kistaitis led all players with 13 kills in the match and also recorded four service aces. Erica Schrader and Eryka Wanyonyi led the Blue Jay defense with 18 and 13 digs respectively. Teresa Becker totaled 34 assists in the match.

In their second game of the day the Blue Jays faced off against Greenville in a matchup of the top two teams in the SLIAC standings. Westminster got off to a good start winning the first set by a score of 25 -21. In the second set Greenville pulled out a close 27-25 victory to tie the match at 1-1. The Blue Jays won the third set 25-23 and then Greenville responded with a 25-21 win in the fourth set to force a tie-breaking fifth set. The Panthers jumped out to an early lead 5-1 in the tie-breaker and never gave up the lead. The Blue Jays pulled within one thanks to a service ace from Wanyonyi and an attack error by the Panthers made the score 11-10. However, Greenville prevailed and closed out the set 15-11 to take the match 3-2.

Kistaitis recorded 27 kills in the match, breaking her own record for most kills in a match in Westminster history. Wanyonyi added 19 kills for Westminster and was one of four Blue Jays to finishes with at least 10 digs. Schrader (15), Becker (15) and Kistaitis (10) each recorded double-dgiti digs as well. Becker recorded 49 assists, which is tied for the third-most ever in a match by a Westminster player.

The Blue Jays play again on Friday Oct. 18 against Spalding at home.
