The Maryville University women's basketball team dropped to 1-1 at the Surf 'N Slam Tournament with a 91-66 loss to nationally ranked No. 15 University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point. The Saints fall to 4-3 overall with the loss and will battle for third place in the tournament hosted by Point Loma Nazarene University. Maryville fell behind early, but was able to keep the lead within single digits for the entire first half. The Saints took their only lead of the game on back-to-back jumpers by junior Sara Wemlinger. She hit a three-point shot at the 5:43 mark to tie the game at 27-27 and then hit a jumper at 5:05 to give the Saints their first and only lead of the game. Foul trouble plagued the Saints throughout the game, as Wis.-Stevens Point shot 14-of-17 (.824) from the free throw line in the first half and 17-of-21 (.810) from the line in the second half. The Pointers also shot 50.9 percent (29-of-57) from the field for the game and out rebounded the Saints 46-27. Leading the Saints effort were Wemlinger and juniors Courtney Bergheger and Kim Douglas. Wemlinger scored a team-high 19 points, while Bergheger and Douglas added 15 and 12 points respectively. Wemlinger also finished with five rebounds, three assists and two steals. Wis.-Stevens Point had five players score in double figures. Haley Houghton shot 12-of-12 from the charity stripe and finished with a game-high 23 points and eight rebounds. Jesirae Heuer and Janell Van Gomple added 11 points a piece, while Katie Webber and Laura Neuenfeldt each scored 10 points. The Saints will now play for third place at the Surf 'N Slam Tournament versus Gustavus Adolphus College at 2:00 pm (PST), Saturday, December 29.
