Golden Eagles Win First Two at Blackburn, 7-0 and 12-1

CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Spalding University baseball team won a pair of games, 7-0 and 12-1, Saturday afternoon in Carlinville, Illinois.

Spalding took the first game, 7-0. The win improves the Golden Eagles to 22-10 overall, 12-2 in conference play. The loss drops the Beavers to 7-23 overall, 4-10 in conference play.

Jimi Keating (10-0) picked up the win, while Jake Lochhead (0-4) was handed the loss. Keating threw seven innings of three hit baseball, tallying ten strikeouts along the way to the complete-game shutout.

Ian Woodall led the way at the plate, going 3-for-4 with a triple, run batted in, and run scored. Blake Patterson went 1-for-2 with a two walks, two runs batted in, and a run scored. Clay Kelly went 2-for-4 with a double and a stolen base. Matt Harper went 1-for-2 with a pair of walks and a run scored. Kam Bruner went 1-for-3 with a double and run scored. CJ Phillips was 1-for-4 with a run batted in and a run scored.

Phillips drove in the first run of the day for the Golden Eagles on a single in the top of the second inning, followed by a two-run single by Patterson. Spalding added single runs in both the third and fifth innings, before icing the game with two more in the sixth. That was more than Keating would need as he cruised to victory.

The Golden Eagles took game two, 12-1. The win improves Spalding to 23-10 on the season. The loss drops Blackburn to 7-24 on the year.

Kyle Olliges (8-1) picks up the win, while Sammy Gordon gets hit with the loss. Olliges tossed seven innings of one run baseball, while surrendering just two hits and racking up sixteen strikeouts.

Jacob Woodruff led the way at the plate in game two, going 1-for-2 with two walks, two stolen bases, a run batted in, and two runs scored. Clay Kelly went 1-for-3 with a double, walk, two runs batted in, and a run scored. Matt Harper went 0-for-1 with four walks, a stolen base, and three runs scored. Kam Bruner went 1-for-3 with a walk, stolen base, run batted in, and run scored. Blake Patterson went 1-for-4 with two runs batted in. Issac Lineberry was 1-for-4 with two runs batted in and a run scored.

The Golden Eagles scored early and often as seven runs came across to score in the top of the first inning, including a run scoring single from Woodruff and a two-run double from Kelly. They added two in the second on a two-run single by Lineberry, and one in the third on a Bruner single. The Beavers got one back as rightfielder Walter Jarvis took Olliges deep for a solo shot. That was all the Beavers would get against Olliges, though, as he shut them down the rest of the way en route to a complete-game victory.

The Golden Eagle Nine are back in action tomorrow, April 23rd, as they go for the three-game sweep on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 2 pm EST.
