PLATTEVILLE, Wis.
Maryville University (Mo.) took advantage of early turnovers and survived a late second half rally by Edgewood College to down the Eagles 78-74, at the Pioneer Tip-Off Classic hosted by UW-Platteville. It was the men’s basketball season opener for both teams. The Saints played with a lead the entire game after building an early 6-0 lead. Edgewood College’s Charlie Averkamp had a double-double leading both teams in scoring and rebounding in the losing effort.
Maryville opened the game strong, scoring the first six points in the game. The Eagles meanwhile starting the game ice cold, shooting 0 for 8 from the field, not converting a field goal until five minutes in when Chris DeMarco, converted a lay-up to cut the Saints lead to four at 8-4. Maryville took advantage of sloppy play by the Eagles as Edgewood College turned the ball over 16 times in the first half, helping Maryville take a 16 point, 44-28 lead into the locker room at half. DeMarco and Charlie Averkamp each had a big first half, DeMarco scoring 8 points and Averkamp scoring 9 points with 6 boards.
In the second half, Saints Aaron Steinke hit a three pointer with 16 minutes remaining to push the lead to a game high 19 points at 54-35. The Eagles would rally, cutting the deficit to ten points with a little over five minutes remaining thanks to a Jon Ciche lay-up. Another Ciche lay-up with 24 seconds remaining cut the Saints lead to only five. Aaron Ritschard drained a three with only six seconds remaining to bring the Eagles to within two points of the Saints at 76-74. A Collin Tubbs foul with two seconds remaining put Maryville’s Teddy McGrath to the line for a chance to seal the game. McGrath sunk both shots, extending the Saints lead to four and ending all hope of an Eagle comeback. Charlie Averkamp led all scorers with 18 points and Jon Ciche, who scored all 12 of his points in the second half joined Averkamp as the only two Edgewood College players in double figures. Chris DeMarco scored 8 points on the day, leaving the game in the first half with an injury. Averkamp had a game high 11 rebounds; Maryville’s Casey Holland led the Saints with 7 boards. The Saints had four players score in double figures as Matt Baker led the way with 15 points. Jake Baechle ended the game with 13 while Aaron Steinke and Drew Simmons had 12 and 10 points respectively.
The loss drops the Eagles to 0-1 on the year while Maryville improves to 1-0 on the year. The Eagles will face Beloit College tomorrow at 5 p.m. to conclude the Pioneer Tip-Off Classic. The Saints will face off against host school, UW-Platteville at 7 p.m. in the other tournament game. Live stats for both games can be found on the UW-Platteville’s athletic website. The Eagles first home game is not until Saturday, December 8 when the Raiders of MSOE come to the Edgedome.
