CARLINVILLE, Ill.—The Fontbonne University men's basketball were back at the SLIAC Championship today for the first time since 2015, however, the No. 1-seeded Blackburn Beavers spoiled the Griffins attempt for the title going on for the 77-69 win.
How It Happened
In the first half, the Beavers opened with a 24-13 lead on Chanz Aldridge's 3-pointer with 9:59 remaining. The Griffins answered over the next four minutes going on a 14-3 run capped off by Caden Clark's layup to tie the game, 27-27.
The two teams went back-and-forth as the clock ticked away as Elijah Rice's layup tied the game once more, 33-33. Then, just before the horn sounded, Rice kicked it over to Cody McKinney who buried his 3-pointer giving Fontbonne the 36-33 advantage at the break.
In the second half, the Griffins led 52-50 with 11:39 remaining on Kevin Anders 3-pointer. The Beavers went on to retake the lead and expanded its advantage out to 62-55 with 6:56 left in regulation.
Fontbonne trimmed the deficit down to 70-66 with 2:03 remaining but that'd be as close as they'd get the Blackburn going on for the eight-point win.
At the conclusion of the game, both Cody McKinney and Noah Coddington were named to the All-Tournament Team.
