CARLINVILLE, Ill.
– A solid defensive effort in the second half by the Maryville University men’s basketball team gave the squad their second win of the season, as they defeated Blackburn College 67-56 on the road in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) action. The Saints (2-5, 1-1 SLIAC) break a five-game losing streak with the victory. Maryville trailed by as many as 10 points midway through the first half, but a 8-2 run in the final 3:31 of the period cut the Saints deficit to only three points heading into halftime. Blackburn came out at the start of the second half and hit back-to-back jumpers to increase their lead to eight points. The Beavers held the lead for the first four minutes of the half until sophomore Jared McCoy sank a free throw to tie the score at 42-42. The two teams went back and forth and tied the score three more times before the Saints took over for good at the 7:37 mark on a good three-point shot by junior Teddy McGrath. Maryville then secured the victory with a 13-3 run to end the game. The Saints defense was solid in the second half, holding the Beavers to 28.6 percent (8-of-28) shooting from the field, 25.0 percent (3-of-11) from three-point range and forcing seven turnovers. Junior Matt Baker posted a game-high 14 points to lead the Saints to victory. He finished a perfect 7-of-7 from the field. McCoy added 10 points, two steals, one assist and one block, while McGrath had nine points, five rebounds and two steals. Other contributors for Maryville include senior Casey Holland (5 rebounds), juniors Aaron Steinke (9 points, 4 rebounds) and Drew Simmons (6 points, 4 rebounds) and sophomore Matt Deimeke (4 rebounds). The Saints finished 41.4 percent (24-of-58) from the field and 60.0 percent (15-of-25) from the charity stripe. They also out rebounded the Beavers 37-32. Blackburn was led by Grant Lamsargis with 14 points on 7-of-10 shooting from the field. Bryan Waters added 11 points, three steals and two assists, while Jeremy Lutz and Ryan Smith pulled down nine and seven rebounds respectively. Maryville is scheduled to return to action next Sunday, December 16, when they host Coe College at 2:00 pm at Moloney Arena.
