CARLINVILLE, Ill. — – A solid defensive effort in the second half by the Maryville University men’s basketball team gave the squad their second win of the season, as they defeated Blackburn College 67-56 on the road in St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) action. The Saints (2-5, 1-1 SLIAC) break a five-game losing streak with the victory.
Maryville trailed by as many as 10 points midway through the first half, but a 8-2 run in the final 3:31 of the period cut the Saints deficit to only three points heading into halftime. Blackburn came out at the start of the second half and hit back-to-back jumpers to increase their lead to eight points. The Beavers held the lead for the first four minutes of the half until sophomore Jared McCoy sank a free throw to tie the score at 42-42.
The two teams went back and forth and tied the score three more times before the Saints took over for good at the 7:37 mark on a good three-point shot by junior Teddy McGrath. Maryville then secured the victory with a 13-3 run to end the game.
