Season-high block total sends volleyball to sweep of Blue Jays

DUBUQUE, Iowa – The St. Olaf College volleyball team had a season-high 12 blocks and hit .317 on its way to a 25-16, 25-9, 25-13 victory over Westminster College (Mo.) on Saturday at Loras College's Lillis Court.

Sophomore Anysia Caille had a team-high eight kills and was in on six blocks to pace St. Olaf (3-6) in its first-ever meeting with Westminster (2-8). Junior Nicole Banitt had six kills on eight errorless swings and added six block assists.

Defensively, junior Selena Rodriguez made a match-high 15 digs and added four aces, marking the third time this season she has had four aces in a match. The Oles' 12 blocks helped St. Olaf hold Westminster to a -.074 attack percentage in the win.

Sophomore Catherine Moore had kills on the first two points of the match to ignite an 8-2 start to the match for St. Olaf. The Oles never trailed in the first set and let by at least five points for the rest of the set.

Similarly, St. Olaf jumped out to an 8-1 run early in the second set and built a commanding 16-3 lead shortly thereafter following a 6-0 run. The Blue Jays committed 11 attack errors in the second set as the Oles ran away with it by a 25-9.

In the third, St. Olaf again raced out to an 8-1 lead and went on to finish off the sweep after hitting a match-best .414 in the set. The Oles did not trail at any point in the match and led by as many as the final margin of 12 in the third and final set.

St. Olaf opens Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (MIAC) at the College of St. Scholastica on Wednesday, Sept. 22 at 7 p.m.
