THE LEAD

CARLINVILLE, Ill. – The Sabercats had a hard time dealing with the defense of Blackburn College today, as MBU fell to a SLIAC opponent for the second straight day.

The Beaver bullpen allowed just five hits on the day, as Blackburn compiled 24 runs over the two games to sweep the doubleheader with relative ease.

THE STORY

For the second day in a row, the Sabercats faced a team who was playing for the pride of ending their season on a high note. Like Principia College, Blackburn did not qualify for the SLIAC Tournament, so their main objective was to wrap up their 2018 season with a couple of wins.

It took the Beavers three innings to generate any real momentum. Their resident slugger, Hannah Goett, hit a sacrifice fly in the first inning, then the Beavers compiled three runs in the third frame. A two-run homer from Daniele Burnell (her eighth of the year) highlighted the bottom of the frame for Blackburn.

Blackburn wrapped things up in the bottom of the sixth inning when Goett notched her second RBI off a sacrifice fly. Goett's RBI was preceded by a two-RBI double from Baylee Hughes, whose hit was her 51st of the season - a mark that leads the Beavers this year. Maranatha had one last chance to tie the game in the top of the seventh, but the seven-run deficit that they faced was too big to overcome.

Tina Kolinski, Harmony Bailey, and Maisy Alldredge were the only Sabercats to record a hit in the opening game. Brooke Daniels went the distance in the circle for Blackburn and recorded a career-high 12 strikeouts.

Game two was even more difficult for the Sabercats, as Blackburn's offense exploded for two homers and 17 runs.

Burnell once again went yard for Blackburn in the second game, and starting pitcher Brooke Daniels launched her first career homer to bring home three runs. The Beavers made four trips to the plate as a team, and they had five-run innings in the first and fourth innings while registering six runs in the third frame.

Burnell was credited with four RBI in the second game while Goett, Fransen, and Brooke Daniels had three RBI each. On Maranatha's side of things, Bailey and Kylee Zempel were the only players to record hits.

THE STATS

Bailey led Maranatha with two hits on the day. Her mark of 20 hits leads the team this season.

Burnell led Blackburn with six RBI in the doubleheader.

BC notched 22 hits on the day.

BLACKBURN REVISITED

• The Beavers are members of the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, ranking eighth in the standings this season.
• Coming into today, the Beavers were 3-7 in their last 10 games.
• The Beavers are now 14-7 in non-conference games this season.
• This was just the fourth time that the Sabercats have tangled with the Beavers. Blackburn leads the series, 8-0.
