Baseball falls in Saturday doubleheader at MUW

COLUMBUS, Miss. - The baseball team dropped their season opening doubleheader at MUW on Saturday. GU lost game one 8-1 before suffering a 2-1 defeat in game two.

In game one, the Panthers fell behind 6-0 after the first inning and 7-0 after two innings.

Greenville mustered a run to avoid the shutout in the top of the sixth when Landon Mokris delivered a sacrifice fly.

Drew Frey went 2-for-2 in the game with two walks and reached base all four times.

Braden Maltbie was saddled with the pitching loss. He faced 11 batters and gave up seven runs, five earned.

Jaxen Gibson offered a five inning scoreless relief appearance as a highlight for GU on the mound.

In game two, starting pitcher Luke Fleener posted zeros for the first five innings before MUW broke through with a run in the sixth inning. Fleener struck out seven in his six inning start.

He yielded the mound to Lucas Teel who gave up a seventh inning run to pick up the loss on the mound.

Frey and Snyder Pennington were 2-for-4 at the plate, and Logan Doll provided a home run in the seventh inning.

The Panthers (0-2) are off until facing Illinois Wesleyan on Friday, Feb. 24, in Greenville.
