Webster Draws Top-Ranked Christopher Newport in NCAA Tourney First Round

ST. LOUIS - The Webster University men's baseball team will be starting its quest for an NCAA III World Series berth by facing the best, taking on the number one ranked Christopher Newport University (VA) in first round action at the South Regional in Millington, TN.

The Gorloks enter the regional at 31-11, fresh off their St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference Tournament championship.  Webster won three straight games to claim the title, defeating Westminster College, 7-2, Fonbonne University, 4-3, and Greenville College in the final, 9-3.  Webster has a 10-game win streak going, its longest of the season.

Christopher Newport will be a challenge at 39-5 and ranked #1in the ABCA Coaches Poll and #2 in the D3.Com Poll.  The Captains are the #1 seed in the South Region that includes colleges from five different states.  Shenandoah University (VA), Piedmont College (GA), Salisbury (MD), and Wabash College (IN) are in the region field as well.

In the double elimination format, the Gorloks will play a single game also on May 19.  If Webster advances to the championships, they will have additional games on May 20, and possibly May 21.

Webster will play Christopher Newport at noon on May 18 at USA Stadium in Millington, a suburb of Memphis and the site of the Webster University Memphis Naval Support Campus.  All games will be played at USA Stadium.
