Gorloks Come Out Running & Gunning in NCAA Game One Win

Millington, Tenn. - The baseball team’s running game revved up the Gorlok offense, while Zach Schneider (FR, Warren Township HS, IL) kept Christopher Newport University’s at bay, as Webster University won in NCAA first round action, 11-1. The Gorloks didn't flinch as they faced the ABCA number one ranked team in the NCAA III, at the South Regional in Millington, TN, on May 18.

Coach Bill Kurich opted to start lefthander Schneider on the mound, and Schneider’s standout year shouldn’t have caused any trepidation throwing him right into the postseason fire. Putting up numbers consistent with his inaugural season, Schneider allowed one run on five hits, striking out six while walking none. He improved to 7-4 on the year and lowered his ERA to 1.86.

Cody Stevenson (SO, Centralia HS, IL) led the Gorlok attack, going three for four, with three runs scored and four stolen bases. Joe Gerace (FR, Oak Park-River Forest HS, IL) was two for four, with two runs scored and two stolen bases. Webster stole eight bases and had the Captains on edge on defense throughout the game.

Gerace and Stevenson opened the scoring with back to back singles with one out in the third. After a double steal and a strikeout, Anthony Genna (SR, Lyons Township, IL) drove a two-out, two-run single into left field to put Webster up 2-0.  Shaky fielding by the Captains helped the Gorloks pick up their third and fourth runs.

After Craig Schaefer (SR, Carterville HS, IL) led off the fourth with a double, he scored on a wild throw to first on a Paul Kienker (SR, St. John Vianney HS) sacrifice bunt. In the fifth, Stevenson led off with an infield hit and scored on a wild pitch after reaching third on a hit and run by Nathan Shelton (SR, Northwest HS). Webster pushed across two more runs in the frame to go up .6-0.  The Gorloks added a single tallies in the sixth and seventh innings, and three more in the ninth.

Webster is 32-11 on the season.  Webster will play the loser of the Piedmont.Salisbury game, on May 19 at 3:30 p.m. at USA Stadium.  Live stats and live video will be available. Follow the Gorloks at:
