Webster Falls to Wheaton, 3-2, in World Series Opener
Appleton, Wis. -
The Webster University baseball team lost to Wheaton College, 3-2,
in the NCAA III
World Series opener at Fox Cities Stadium, on May 25,
in Appleton, Wis.
With the loss, the Gorloks will have to battle their
way out of the
elimination bracket if they hope to win the
championship.
The Gorloks
found themselves in a 2-0 hole in the first as the
Lyons led off with two
singles and scored on a groundout, and on a
single with two out.
Webster scored a run in the third after Cody
Stevenson (JR, Centralia
HS, IL) tripled with one out, and Taylor Stoulp (SO,
St. Mary’s HS,
MO) singled him in. But an even bigger opportunity
eluded Webster as
Stoulp stole second but held up at third on a single
to right by Henke.
After a strikeout and fly out, the Gorloks
still trailed.
Webster’s
next best opportunity came in the fourth when Mitchell
Bonds (JR, Kankakee
CC, IL) led off with a double but got gunned down
trying to stretch it
into a triple. Kevin Kojs (SO, Lincoln Way Central
HS, IL) followed
with a single but was stranded. Wheaton added another
run in the fourth
but the Gorloks couldn’t get back on the
board.
Stoulp continues
his post-season assault on pitching. Named
the Millington
Regional Most Valuable Player after going 10-18, with
eight RBIs, Stoulp
opened the World Series with a two for four effort,
with an RBI and
stolen base. In the process he extended his
personal hitting streak
to 19 games and has a hit in 34 of his last 35
games.
David Mueller
(SR, Westminster Christian Academy, MO) went
seven innings,
allowing five hits, one walk, and three runs, two
earned. Mueller struck
out seven and increased his single season team record
to 109 Ks.
Steven Dooley (JR, Florissant Valley CC, MO) pitched
the eighth and set a
Webster single season record for appearances by
a pitcher with his
24th of 2012.
The Gorloks are
35-13 on the season. Webster will play at 10:00
a.m. on May
26 vs. the loser of the Cortland State (NY)/Kean
University(NJ). That game will
be video streamed live at ncaa.com.
